Plot summary

A drowning figure with three fingers and jar-lid eyes tries to keep its head above water. Shellfish with baby faces scream as they’re fished from the sea. An arguing couple rip a mouth off of each other. A fish is flattened by a rolling pin on a baking table. A face becomes a shapeless mass of eyes and openings when someone looks away.

Här är karusellen (literally ‘Here is the Carousel’) also has another title: Revolver. In Latin, revolvere means to roll back, to return. Every single scene is a loop. Everything is repeated, over and over again.

The film, drawn and made in black and white 2D animation, won a raft of international prizes. In 2006 Jonas Odell’s Never Like the First Time (Aldrig som första gången), an animated documentary made with various animation techniques, won a Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Här är karusellen has been digitally restored by the Swedish Film Institute and is available with English subtitles.
