After posing as a model for celebrated artist Zoret's new sculpture, the young painter Mikael is adopted by the master and becomes his protégé. Mikael begins to spend more and more time with Zoret's possible wife-to-be, the countess Lucia, and has to borrow money from Zoret to finance her extravaganzas. When Zoret becomes fatally ill, Mikael finally understands the nature of his relationship to the sculptor.

The drama is framed by a story wherein the director Stiller gets an idea for a new film, chooses the actors and goes to the cinema to see the final result, and witnesses the reactions afterwards.
