Plot summary

Mai Zetterling, who began her career as an international film star, was one of few Swedish female directors for quite some time. Her directorial debut came in 1964 with Loving Couples, while she rounded off her career in 1986 with Amorosa. Both films share a connection to writer Agnes von Krusenstjerna. While Zetterling’s debut is based on Von Krusenstjerna’s The Miss von Pahlen’s series, Amorosa deals with the writer’s own life. Amorosa was the first Swedish feature film Zetterling had produced in 18 years, and was praised as a triumphant return. Stina Ekblad does a brilliant job depicting Von Krusenstjerna’s erotic intensity, thirst for freedom and fragility, while Erland Josephson plays an impressive version of her husband. Both actors received Swedish Guldbagge Awards for their roles, while Zetterling won the Guldbagge Award for Best Director.

Actor and director Mai Zetterling was active for many decades in Sweden, the US and England, producing feature films, documentaries and shorts. Her films were often quite controversial, with later generations praising her as a feminist role model.
