Sören Mårtensson is a school teacher – his work is a nightmare, he is scared of children, both at work and in his private life, thereby alienating his wife Gunvor who wants to start a family. She says feels cheated by him. He can neither communicate with his pupils nor control them since he does not believe in authoritarian teaching methods. During a walk in the harbour Mårtensson meets an old school friend, a photographer. Mårtensson talks openly to his old friend of his fears: his mistake is, he says, that he is on the side of the pupils against himself. Mårtensson is on duty when one of his pupils is hit by a truck. This event trigger a severe sense of guilt and his nightmares intensify and take over his waking life.
