Plot summary

In the icy heart of the breathtakingly beautiful winter landscape of Kiruna, Viktor Strandgård dies for the second time. He is lying on his back in the Kraftkälla Church, looking through the enormous windows in the ceiling as life is fading away. The aurora borealis slithers like a dragon through the night skies when this story about religious and sexual dominance begins in the northernmost regions of Sweden above the Arctic Circle. Rebecka Martinsson, a young single and successful lawyer, receives a telephone call from Sanna, a childhood friend. She has found her own brother, the spiritual leader of an evangelical church group, brutally murdered in the middle of the church aisle. Sanna has gone into hiding and pleads desperately with Rebecka to help her as she is suspected by the police and fears losing custody of her two children. Reluctantly, Rebecka catches a plane to her native town Kiruna, a place she long ago left both in a physical and mental sense. Here in the land of the midnight sun where minds are heavy with the winter’s never ending darkness and where the only source of light is the trillion twinkling snow crystals in the sweeping northern lights. When Rebecka starts investigating the circumstances around Viktor’s death she encounters heavily pregnant police inspector Anna-Maria Mella, who is in charge of the case. Working on separate leads they make various discoveries and meet eccentric members of the congregation. Back in Kiruna, Rebecka relives her traumatic memories. Images return of her deep desire and admiration for the charismatic pastor Thomas Söderberg. Of meetings, of how the pastors’ interpretation of the Bible entices and distorts, of intoxicating sexuality that grows stronger and stronger. When Rebecka Martinsson dives further into this murder-mystery, her life is threatened both unbeknownst to her, as well as in plain sight of day. The latter is also one of the events that lead the story forward to the dramatic conclusion.
