Handling

The Institute of Incoherent Geography (L'Institut de Géographie Incohérente) is meeting to plan a feat of exploration that will surpass anything yet attempted. A trip around the world is proposed and dismissed. The members of the society have amusing comic-opera names: Engineer Mabouloff (Scatterbrains), President Latrouille (Milktoast), Archivist Lataupe (Mole>), Secretary Moulard (Fathead), Vice President Patoche (Fumblefingers), and members of the expedition Fouinard (Busybody), Ventrouillard (Fatgut), and Laflemme (Slothful). These seven social sins led by the disoriented scientist Mabouloff tell a lot about Méliès' opinion of vainglorious scientific accomplishment. The president introduces Engineer Mabouloff (Méliès), who has a remarkable project involving all known modes of transportation. Having agreed to this plan, the members whith their wives depart for the factory. In the factory, a steel and glass structure like the one in "A Trip to the Moon", the engineer reveals his remarkable vehicles: A special train, an automobile, a dirigible, a submarine, and a refrigerator car. In the foundry Mabouloff displays further wonders while his wife has a comic altercation with a foundry worker. The travelers depart for their expedition by train. As they depart two would-be participants arrive but are turned away. The train pulling out of the station is reminiscent of the train seen from inside the station i Porter's "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) except that Méliès' train is painted flat while Porter used an insert matte shot. A model shot shows the special train crossing a Swiss landscape, going past a waterfall and over a tressel bridge. In a closer view, the passengers are seen in their compartments. The train stops, the doors are opened and the passengers descend. At the foot of the Jungfrau, local citizens await the arrival of the train. The travelers disembark while the scientific equipment is unloaded. Méliès has repeated the descent of the travelers in two scenes, neglecting the possibility of cutting and joining the shots to achieve continuous action. The adventurers climb aboard their special three-dimensional car, the "Automobouloff", garnished with all their equipment, and take off for the mountain. Traveling at great speed, the automobile approaches the Righi Inn. The out-of-control car plunges into the wall of the inn. Inside the hotel a number of persons are enjoying a banquet. The "Automobouloff" crashes through the wall causing havoc as it drives over the table and continues on course out a window. Again the two linked actions are separated by an unnatural lapse of time. Undaunted the expedition hurtles across the rocky landscape of Mount Righi where it tumbles off course into a chasm. The scene of the failed attempt dissolves to a hospital where the voyagers are recovering from their injuries. Outside the hospital the members of the expedtion, now cured, emerge and board their special train for another try. The elliptical time lapse is covered by a dissolve with no additional explanation. The aerobus hurtles up the sloped face of the Jungfrau and off into space. The train travels through the heavens, passing stars, comets, and personified constellations. A scintillating sun rises, yawning and smiling with the new day. The speeding train approaches and flies into the sun's open mouth. The disagreeable intruder causes indigestion and the sun belches flames. The train has landed with a terrible crash in a curious solar landscape. The surface flames and erupts while the explorers clamber out of the debris. The indomitable travelers admire the extraordinary, crystaline landscape with the aurora borealis overhead. However, the heat soon bcomes insufferable. Mabouloff puts his party in the refrigeration wagon. They freeze into a solid block of ice. To correct this situation the engineer builds a fire and melts the block, reviving his colleagues. There is no time to lose in escaping this inhospitable place. The party recovers its submarine, which is pushed off a cliff bound for earth. The new vehicle dives toward the ocean, its fall broken by a parachute. At the bottom of the sea the explorers dispute about how they are to escape from the submarine. Outside the windows of the craft sea monsters swim by. Land is spotted, but a fire has broken out in the engine room. Suddenly the ship explodes. In a little Breton port sailors are going about their duties when an explosion in the ocean sends up jets of water. The nose cone of the ship lands on dry ground but the expedition disembarks unharmed. The party returns triumphantly to the Institute of Incoherent Geography. (texten ur Artificially Arranged Scenes.
