Johanna St Michaels was born and raised in Swedens Värmland region. After finishing school in this isolated part of the country she made the dramatic switch to the intensity of New York in order to study acting at the Lee Strassberg institute. She featured in numerous short films, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway plays in New York and in Los Angeles. She then studied at Manhattan's School of Visual Art where she received her B.A. in fine art and photography before returning to Sweden to achieve her M.A. in photography at the University of Gothenburg. Her debut documentary film Best Wishes, Bernard (2004) received instant acclaim and won the Swedish film institute's prize "Dokumentärfilms premien" in 2003. Her photographs have been exhibited at various galleries in New York.
