Fallet Gracie Budd (1953)

Gracie, like Billy, is blond and youthful and (so at least we are given to understand) attractive; but unlike Billy she is not a staunch and incorruptible incarnation of the principle of innate virtue. Both her parents were killed in the war, leaving her (in the words of the commentary with which her semi-documentary story is introduced) "with memories of screaming bombs and all its havoc". She takes to shop-lifting at the Co-op, stores, while her flash spiv friend Pete keeps the get-away car ticking over outside. Caught and jugged, Gracie determines on release to go straight, but the intoxicating rhythms of the juke-box at the old Carlo's café (where she gets a job as a waitress), coupled with the reappearance of Pete, divert her from these good resolutions. She gives Pete the key to the café; Pete puts paid to old Carlo; the police close in; Pete is shot dead and Gracie severely wounded. Crime does not pay. (Monthly Film Bulletin nr 237, oktober 1953)
