Ögat (1967)

Paolo, an amoral documentary filmmaker, searches for the bizarre and the sensual. While shooting a gazelle chase in the Sahara with his cameraman assistant, Valentino, Paolo records the reactions of the other members of his party as they suffer exposure and near-starvation after their truck breaks down. After being rescued as planned, Paolo follows two of the guests, John Bates and his wife, Barbara, aboard a liner bound for Bombay. He easily seduces the bored Mrs. Bates and persuades her to become his leading lady. Once in Bombay, Paolo films opium addicts undergoing a "cure" in which they are beaten with huge paddles. When only six "patients" appear, he recruits additional phony participants to make the footage more vivid and then records Barbara's horrified reactions. In Bali, he films deafmute prostitutes. Following an unsuccessful attempt to persuade a Buddhist priest to immolate himself while he and Barbara makes lov, Paolo persuades a senile and starving maharajah to participate in a butterfly-eating sequence in exchange for a tin of beef. Shocked, Barbara rebukes Paolo for being the instrument of a producer who makes money from the suffering and shame of others. Later, the group goes on to Saigon for scenes of the war i Vietnam, and Barbara witnesses the execution of a young Vietcong suspect and Paolo's brutal beating by the Vietcong. She considers going back to her busband, but, feeling for the first time that Paolo may really need her, she remains. When Paolo learns that Vietcong terrorists will bomb a local bar, he sets up an automatic camera and hides in a back room, without warning the patrons of the danger. He is elated to capture footage of the blast, which kills most of those inside. Then Paolo discovers the lifeless body of Barbara; and despite his grief he asks Valentino to keep the camera focused on his face as the tears flow down his cheeks. (American Film Institute Catalog)
