Plot summary

Filip is a cloakroom attendant at a large restaurant. He is a dreamer, which at times leads to him handing out the wrong clothes, and feels his life is a failure. He consoles himself with a sip of brandy from his hip flask. One night a party of three arrives to the restaurant: The ruthless Kurtz, Mr. Viding and his beautiful wife Jane. Viding owes some dangerous people a considerable sum of money that need to be paid pronto, and Kurtz has agreed to pay the money. In return he demands that Jane shall be "obliging" to him. She finds him revolting but her husband insists that she should follow Kurtz upstairs to a chambre separée. Filip sees Jane taking a gun out of her husband’s pocket following Kurtz upstairs. The husband also notices this and rushes up to disarm her; there is a scuffle, a shot is fired and the husband falls down dead. Filip dashes to the spot, takes the gun – and the blame. His testimony that he is the murderer is so convincing as to make the judge certain of Filip’s guilt even though Jane tries to tell the truth. Filip is sent to jail for six years. When he is released he becomes an itinerant salesman an by chance knocks on Jane's door. She says that he must marry her in order for her to atone her guilt. But he refuses. At last his life has acquired some meaning.
