Plot summary

19th century Hälsingland. The wealthy farmer Germund's daughter Marit is engaged to be married to the neigbouring farmer Elias' son Mats. Down by the lake a young man sits playing the violin. It is the penniless farmhand Jon who is despised by all because of being born out of wedlock. His mother was Gertrud who was supposed to marry Germund but met a violin player, which resulted in Jon being born. Jon's parents were ostracised and they drowned themselves in the river.
