16th century Sweden. After a plot against the king was discovered among the Scottish mercenaries employed in the army of King John III, the ringleaders were imprisoned and the rest were escorted out of Sweden. Three of the imprisoned knights – Sir Archie, Sir Donald and Sir Philip – manage to escape during a severe winter and take refuge on the west coast, which was then a Danish province. Posing as itinerant craftsmen, they learn about a silver treasure kept at the home of Sir Arne, a wealthy priest. The knights kill Sir Arne and most other members of the household, set the building on fire, and flee over the ice with their heavy loot. They arrive at the port of Marstrand and find a ship sailing for Scotland. The ship cannot leave for a while, however, due to the fact that the sea around it is frozen over. Whilst waiting the guilt-ridden Sir Archie falls in love with Elsalill, the foster daughter of Sir Arne and the only survivor after the robbery, who initially does not recognise him.
