Plot summary
Theatre manager Sture Anker has just made a flop at his theatre with a self-written play about the meaninglessness of life, starring himself in the lead role. Once the bored audience has left the auditorium, he has only to wait for the reviews. Sture is alone at the theatre, or thinks so at least, but suddenly a girl steps out of the dark. She says she is from the third row, and starts to tell a story about a ring. A ring which teaches that life is not at all meaningless or based on random chance. The story begins at the home of Vilma Andersson, an old lady, who sells her most precious possession – a ring given to her by the great love of her youth – in order to help a young couple. And so the ring travels on…
