Sweden, the 14th century. The prosperous farmer Töre and his wife Märeta send their only daughter, the virginal Karin, and their foster daughter Ingeri, who still believe in the old gods and is jealous of Karin, to deliver candles to a distant church. On their way the girls become separated and Karin encounters three goat herders, two of which brutally rape and murder her. Ingeri witnesses this while hidden. When the killers unwittingly seek refuge in the home of their victim and one of them tries to sell Karin's coat to her mother the parents suspect what has happened, which is confirmed by Ingeri. Töre plots a fitting revenge.
