Ingeborg Holm's husband is granted a loan from the bank to set up a grocery store. When he suddenly dies from a lung disease, Ingeborg is left widowed with three children, whilst trying to run the shop by herself. Unable to pay the debts, she loses their home and is forced to send her children away and ends up in a poor people's home. Trying to secretly visit the foster home of her eldest daughter, she is caught by the police, and when later her youngest daughter does not recognise her, she loses her mind and is sent to an institution. Many years later she is visited by her son, and her memories come back when he shows her an old photograph.
