Plot summary

Marguerite Hoffman and Georg Winkler two Swedish expatriates meet in Monte Carlo. He is an excellent shot with his pistol but a failure as a gambler and now broke intends to take his life. She is a divorcée with a failed acting career, and she persuades him to take a drink with her instead of shooting himself. They become a couple and start performing in a circus as the act "Mr. Hard and Miss Hardy." He as the pistol sharpshooter and she as the target girl. The climax of their performance is when he encircles her head in a halo with six shots. One evening Marguerite meets her former husband, the lawyer Björn Hoffman and Georg becomes unreasonably jealous. He gets drunk together with the clown Toni and his girl Lulu. Georg starts a relationship with Lulu which leads to Marguerite leaving him and the circus. Lulu replaces her, both as lover and as target girl. Some years pass and Georg and Lulu now perform at a third rate circus. Georg has by this time grown tired of Lulu. He meets Marguerite by chance and he asks her to return. When Georg and Lulu have their last performance together, Marguerite is in the audience. Lulu is struck by the sixth bullet and drops dead. Georg is arrested, but walks free after Marguerite persuades Hoffman to act as his defense lawyer in the trial. Lulu had set up her own suicide while trying to frame Georg in the process.
